Cops are just doing their job
I am responding to the letter about "tickethappy cops" written by Julie Freeman of Calabasas. I have lived in Calabasas for over 23 years and I welcome the deputies patrolling our area. You probably have seen me: I walk with my two dogs, one a Dalmatian.

No tickets issued if you simply obey the law
I am constantly amazed about those who complain about increased police presence in the area. The only reason there is an increase in ticketing is that the sheriff has finally realized that many in this area believe the laws simply do not apply to them.

You can like it or leave it
People that complain about traffic enforcement in our community has become annoying. In a letter last week, an outraged Calabasas resident fumed over police officers that "are ticketing for any traffic violation" and even provided several examples of those out of control cops in action.

Thankful for the sheriff's patrols
In the past few months there have been a few letters in The Acorn complaining about the local law enforcement issuing tickets for speeding, failure to stop at intersections, and using a cellphone while driving. We take for granted that we live in community which is extremely safe.

Deputies show wrong priorities
We can all agree our sheriff's deputies are an important part of the community. They are well trained, their emergency response time is excellent, and they deserve our support. However, the deputies should understand "respect" is earned, not enforced.

Unusual strategy
In response to "Youth basketball leagues turn to female leadership." You don't know the half of Susie Troxler's commitment to bringing each player into "being a part of a team," nor half the emotion she feels "seeing a child make a basket for the first time" until you have been a parent of a child on her team, sitting in the bleacher seats,

No longer safe
On Jan. 21 I arrived home at 6:30 p.m. with my 3-year-old twin boys. As soon I reached the door that connects my house with the garage I noticed that something unusual had happened. The door was locked. Usually my wife drops off the twins in the morning and leaves home without locking this door. I was able to open it.

Septic tanks deemed a problem
The city of Calabasas declares septic tank systems to be unhealthy, antique, passé. No matter the cost, the septic tanks must go. Septic tank water seeps into the ground. This is unhealthy and will no longer be tolerated.

Good show by the major
I attended Calabasas Mayor Mary Sue Maurer's recent State of the City address and I was so impressed by her and what she had to say. She described all the recent accomplishments of the city under her leadership, highlighted by the opening of the environmentally and architecturally acclaimed Civic Center— completed on schedule and on budget.

Dog and pony
Congress is at it again with their "dog and pony show." They talk about spending too much money and they are not able to make our tax cuts permanent. Then they turn around and give all the thieves the taxpayers' money.

Wasteful spending
How in this time of financial stress does Rancho Simi Parks and Recreation District want to waste over $380,000, not including upkeep or consideration of drought conditions, on a "splash park" in Oak Park? Who thought this up? Were residents polled? Is there going to be an admission fee?

Lesson on lending
Larry Brown ("Placing the blame," Jan. 22) is engaging in partisan politics by solely laying the blame on Republicans for our economic decline. He claims it was not the Community Reinvestment Act passed by President Carter, a Democratic congress, and enforced by President Clinton that contributed to the subprime debacle.

Community rose to the occasion
Heartfelt thanks to all attendees at the memorial to beloved Yerba Buena teacher Liz Rogers. The elementary school multipurpose room was filled to capacity and overflowing outside with widespread community support of a special friend who touched so many lives.

Your turn to speak
Just as physical exercise is good for the body, First Amendment exercise is good for democracy. The Acorn Letters to the Editor section gives you an excellent opportunity to put your freedom of speech to work by voicing opinions, thoughts and concerns on any matter you wish.
