Race for pancreatic cancer slated Road2ACure and the Bardwil family will sponsor both a 5K and 10K chip timed race to raise awareness and funds for pancreatic cancer at 9 a.m. Sat., Feb. 14 at the Westlake Village City Hall, 31200 Oak Crest Drive. A free 1K fun run for children under the age of 10 will begin at 10:30 a.m. A post-race event will include live music. The races are in memory of Pam Bardwil, an avid runner and a Westlake Village resident who died of pancreatic cancer in 2008. Bardwil was an active member of the community who served on the WLMA Board and also as president of Southshore for seven years. According to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, pancreatic cancer not only has the lowest survival rate of all major cancers, but its funding accounts for less than two percent of the National Cancer Institute's research funding. Pancreatic cancer is one of the few cancers whose survival rates have not improved substantially over the past 25 years. Road2ACure, a nonprofit organization, was founded by Jennifer and Chris Calaprice. Chris Calaprice was diagnosed with the disease in October 2003.
