Car hits boy on bicycle

A student who was riding his bicycle to Medea Creek Middle School in Oak Park was hit by a car, Wed., Jan. 7 at dismissal time. The boy was not injured, said Tony Knight, superintendent of Oak Park schools.

The boy apparently was riding his bike down the school's entrance driveway where a parked SUV obstructed his view. He rode into the street where he was struck by a car and thrown into the air. He was not wearing a helmet, Knight said. Paramedics were called, but no treatment was necessary.

"The school requires students to walk their bikes down that hill and off campus and also requires that they wear helmets; however, the student was in violation of both of these rules," Knight said in a message to parents. School officials "implore everyone" to drive slowly in the vicinity of Oak Park campuses.

"Remember that children will not always use good judgment, think things through or behave rationally, even though we all work hard to instill these things in them," Knight said. "This is simply a developmental issue. Drivers must take the responsibility to be extra alert and drive at a virtual crawl around schools at pickup and dropoff times."
