Audubon Society announces activities

The Conejo Valley Audubon Society will meet at 7:30 p.m. Mon., Jan. 5 at the Western Foundation for Vertebrate Zoology,

439 Calle San Pablo, Camarillo.

Johyn Krist, chief executive of the Farm Bureau of Ventura County, will be the guest speaker. Krist has published commentaries in various newspapers on land use policy, natural resources and environmental issues.

He is the author of three books about California's parks and wilderness areas, including "Living Legacy: The Story of Ventura County Agriculture."

Following are the society's birding trips for January.

•Jan. 3, Sierra Vista/ Satwiwa. Meet at 8 a.m. Las Posas Park and Ride or 8:15 a.m. Sierra Vista. See sparrows, hawks, woodpeckers. Leader is Tom Halpin, (805) 746-4598.

•Jan. 9, Point Mugu Naval Base. Meet at base entrance parking lot before 8 a.m. See Vermilion Flycatcher, Peregrine Falcon, ducks, shorebirds, reddish egret, longtailed duck, brandt, possible tundra swan. Limited to 25 people; must bring picture ID. To get on the list, call Don Williamson, (818) 889-4498 at least three weeks ahead of trip.

•Jan. 17, Santa Clark River Estuary. Meet 8 a.m. Las Posas Park and Ride or 8:30 a.m. Surfer's Knoll parking lot on Spinnaker Avenue, Ventura Harbor. See shorebirds, ducks, snowy plovers, blacknecked stilts, American Avocets, gulls, grebes, loons. Leader is Thelma Williams, (805) 4922796.
