City of Agoura Hills plans busy month of April

The Agoura Hills city Department of Community Services announces events for April and the coming months. Unless otherwise noted, all programs will take place at the Agoura Hills Recreation Center, 30610 Thousand Oaks Blvd. For more information on any event, call (818) 597-7361.

•Rehearsals for the spring performance of the Community Concert and Jazz Band will be at 7 p.m. on Tuesdays in the Agoura High School band room, 38545 Driver Ave. Community members interested in joining the band should call Roger Vick at (805) 381-1325.

•Friday Night Caravans for Kids will be from 6 to 10 p.m. April 4, April 18 and May 2. Children will take a bus from the Agoura Hills Recreation Center to the Thousand Oaks Chuck E. Cheese's. After dinner, children will return to the recreation center to watch a movie. Cost of each caravan is $20.

•A Friday Night Adventure Club for teens will be from 6 to 10 p.m. The group will take the city shuttle to local shopping centers for dinner and movies. The group will visit the Westlake Promenade on April 11, the Calabasas Commons on April 25 and the Janss Marketplace on May 9. Cost is $20 per child, plus money for dinner. Movie admission will be provided.

•A "Mature Drivers Training" course for senior citizens ages 55 and older will be from 9 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. Tues., April 22. The defensive driving course can help seniors qualify for reduced auto insurance rates. Cost is $12 for Senior Center registrants and $14 for nonregistrants.

•The 11th annual Senior Expo will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wed., April 23 at the Agoura Hills/Calabasas Community Center, 27040 Malibu Hills Road. The free event showcases products and services available to seniors. There will be booths and displays from different organizations, vendors, senior services, health screenings, demonstrations, free door prizes and a free catered lunch for the first 250 seniors to RSVP. •Art classes for teens and adults will be Wednesdays from April 23 to May 28. "World of Art" for teens ages 15 to 18 will be from 5 to 5:55 p.m. The adult class for ages 18 and older will be from 12:30 to 1:25 p.m. Students will learn the basics of drawing and painting.

An art exhibit will be held the last day of class. The cost is $60 plus a $9 non-refundable materials fee due to the instructor on the first day of class.

•A babysitter 's training seminar for teens ages 11 to 15 will be from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sat., April 26. The program will cover the business of babysitting, family interviews, professional behavior, problem solving, telephone safety tips, age appropriate games and toys, household safety, baby basics and basic first aid and CPR skills for children and infants.

The workshop costs $40 plus a $25 materials fee.

•Team packets from the Summer 2008 Adult Basketball League are available. The league plays Sundays from 6 to 10 p.m., and Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7 to 10 p.m. The league will begin the week of May 18. Cost is $400 per team.

•Two Kindergarten Readiness Workshops, "Animal Phonics" and "Getting Ready to Read with Nursery Rhymes," will be held this summer from Tues., June 24 to Thurs., July 17 and Tues., July 22 to Thurs., Aug. 14.

"Animal Phonics" will be offered from 10 to 11 a.m. and "Nursery Rhymes" will be from 11 a.m. to noon. Both workshops aid children entering kindergarten and first grade in developing reading skills.

Each four-week workshop will consist of two classes per week, on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

The cost of one session is $160 plus a $5 non-refundable materials fee paid to the instructor on the first day of class.
