What happened to Agoura's hills? It is sad and heartbreaking to see the development now underway on what was a gentle and lovely grassy knoll at Reyes Abode and Old Agoura Road. I watched the wooden stakes going up and a crowd of people in nice suits walking down the hill smiling as they licked their chops in anticipation--people who clearly could not give a damn about Agoura Hills. In the past few years the massive amount of commercial and residential development in Agoura Hills has been unceasing, changing the look and feel of our town and transforming it into what I suppose it always was--a massive goldmine ripe for the picking by those inclined to do so. Our feeble mayor and his corrupt City Council have allowed themselves to become pawns to the developers in a trend fully endorsed by The Acorn by its silent support of the rape of our once-beautiful environment. There was a time when Agoura Hills lived up to its name, displaying lovely hillsides that were so much a part of our identity and what made us so unique. Now they are being replaced by empty office buildings, concrete parking lots and snarled traffic as far as the eye can see. Unchecked development is not progress--it is a landmark to greed and a tribute to the betrayal of citizens by people sworn into office to allow the gentle charm of Agoura Hills to be pillaged and destroyed for their own pocketbooks and prestige. And we should all be ashamed for allowing it to happen. That will be our lasting legacy for generations to come. |
