Students meet 'Father Serra' during Gardens of the World history program

For the fifth consecutive year, the Gardens of the World will host fourth grade students and their teachers to a series of programs on California history featuring "Father Serra."

Between November and April 2009, performer Bruce Buonauro will portray Father Serra in 22 presentations. Serra is credited with helping settle California and building nine missions from San Diego to Sonoma in the last 1700s.

There is no charge for the programs, but reservations are taken on a first come, first served basis. Schools provide their own transportation. Classes may also bring picnic lunches and have docentled tours of the gardens during the visit.

The Gardens has hosted more than 50 schools and 10,000 students since the program began in 2003.

For information or reservations, call (805) 557-1135 or visit www.gardensoftheworld.info.
