Solstice Canyon remains closed
Trails need repairs, debris cleanup following November fire

Solstice Canyon, a hiking and equestrian site in Malibu, remains closed due to November's Corral fire. There are numerous safety hazards along trails and roadways from the fire's impact that must be mitigated.

"We are very keen to reopen this popular site as soon as possible but must ensure the public's safety before we do so," said Woody Smeck, superintendent of the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area, a unit of the National Park Service.

Park staff will reassess factors regarding visitor safety in May and determine if the canyon will open or remain closed.

Five buildings were destroyed in the fire, and the remaining debris must be removed. Several roads and trails within the canyon are covered with rock debris, which continues to fall and slide.

Crews will clear the debris, stabilize some slopes and then monitor the paths for additional rock fall.
