Oak Park comes through

What an amazing week in Oak Park. First, I was asked to speak at an Awareness Fair to seventh graders about diabetes, the fastest growing epidemic among teens and adults, at Medea Creek Middle School.

Two days later, I was honored to attend the intergenerational Senior Prom at Oak Park High School where the school club Students For A Cure collected money for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. So many people donated money and had stories of their own to tell.

My son, Benjamin (who has Type 1 diabetes and Celiac disease) and I were honored to hear their stories and felt overwhelmed by their donations and heartfelt support. We started out as strangers that night, and ended up hugging, crying, and making new friends. Our family would like to thank the Oak Park community, including the wonderful students who are in the club, as well as the principal of Oak Park High School for supporting them in their endeavor, the superintendent of the Oak Park School District who obviously supports the programs such as the Awareness Fair and the Senior Prom, and Sophia Fischer, who was instrumental in making all of this come about.

With generosity and support like yours, perhaps there will be a cure for diabetes in our son's lifetime. Gila and David Brook Agoura Hills
