The senior blues I am very disappointed in the rather cavalier manner in which the Sunrise Senor Living matter was dismissed by the Westlake Village City Council, especially after all the hoops you put them through which were all handled properly and positively. As a community resident with a near 89-year-old WWII father who was a multi-decorated hero and now has Alzheimer's and is a resident of Sunrise on Townsgate, I certainly know it is also a community senior center in many respects. I also have a near 89-year-old mother who would soon be an ideal candidate for the rejected project. It is sad that four of five members did not even visit the facility on Townsgate and see what a wonderful job they do with the most frail seniors. The new proposed facility could have housed people who are unable to continue living in their homes, but who may not need 24-hour care, only help with meals, transportation and daily activities. The new facility was even offering monthly meal packages for couples or singles still living in their homes but who needed this ingredient. They were also offering educational and entertainment activities for outside seniors and others interested in partaking. Intergenerational activities with nearby churches would have also been beneficial and stimulating. After visiting Sunrise Senior Living many times, I know how caring they are for our seniors. When I get to that age, I hope there are alternatives for me in this community that my children or caretakers can find to care for me. Linda Catlin Westlake Village |
