School 'prom' a big success

It seems that we see stories in the media daily about troubled teens and awful happenings at high schools around the country.

Amidst all this, a group of Oak Park High School students, calling themselves "students for a cure," have "adopted" a local boy who suffers from diabetes and- in his honor- support the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation at various events.

On Wed., Feb. 13, these enthusiastic and talented kids organized and presented a wonderful intergenerational "senior prom" at Oak Park High and invited everyone over 55 in the community to attend at no cost.

The evening included decorations for Valentine's Day, dinner, dessert and plenty of music, including dance standards played by the OPHS Jazz Band and a DJ.

Several dozen of us attended and had an absolutely superb time. Though the event was free, more than $1,000 was raised for the JDRF.

But it was the OPHS students who made the evening- making sure that we were all taken care of and that we enjoyed the evening. They were just great, and we are so proud of them. Thank you. Let's do it again next year. Harvey Kern Oak Park
