Oak Park road brings danger We who live on the side streets that exit only onto Oak Hills Drive know its traffic dangers. Exiting from Vista Dorado onto Oak Hills Drive, we have a very limited view to the right- blocked by trees and an electrical panel- and a blind traffic pocket on the left which hides cars from our view. Oak Hills Drive has many curves which block visibility, magnified by the many parked cars. The high school generates fast driving by young drivers, and also pedestrian students. The park/creek on the east side of the road generates walkers, joggers and wildlife crossings. There are residences on the west side of the street which have obstructed view of oncoming traffic. The current 35 mph speed limit is too high for safety reasons. It must be reduced to 30 mph and passively enforced by speed bumps at each T-intersection plus a four-way stop sign at the intersection with Medea Creek Lane. The fact that the Transportation Department is busy counting vehicles and would consider raising the speed limit to accommodate lawbreakers shows how out of touch it is with its constituents. I witnessed a serious collision in November 2007 which was not reported in The Acorn story of Jan. 31. Most of us who live here have had many near-collisions and it is only a matter time before a serious injury, or a fatality, occurs. When that happens, some lawyer will sue the county, which means the taxpayers will pay. If the department is supposed to be working for us, it better start listening to us. Otherwise, we will be forced to organize to turn out our elected officials and vote in new ones who will listen to us and force the department to protect us. Howard J. Fox Oak Park |
