Residents may sign up for Calabasas historical tour

The Calabasas Historical Society taking reservations for its new guided tour excursion highlighting local historical landmarks.

The Calabasas History Tour will be Sun., March 9 and again on Sat., April 12. The tour will visit several significant landmarks representing the area's rich historical diversity. Knowledgeable guides from the historical society will share facts, legend and lore at such points of interest as the Sepulveda Adobe, Old Town Calabasas, Park Moderne, King Gillette Ranch and the SOPHIE Inc. Pet Cemetery.

The 2.5 hour tour is free and open to the public. Attendees will meet at the Sagebrush Cantina to begin the tour at 10 a.m. Following the tours, an optional brunch at the restaurant is available for $23.95 on March 9 and lunch for $20 on April 12. Seating is limited to 20 people. Reservations must be made in advance by calling Bruschaber at (818) 5911701 ext 205.

The tour is a new program in conjunction with the city's recently passed historical ordinance.

"We are offering tours to bring these preserved landmarks' stories to the community so people can appreciate their significance," said Debbie Bruschaber, president of the society.

"Knowing local history enriches one's sense of place while also putting perspective on the bigger picture. We're very excited to be a part of the program and hope that people will take advantage of it," Bruschaber said.

Society members who are helping to create the tours include Judy Jordan, Robin Mitchell, Taryn Wayne and Calabasas Mayor James Bozajian.

Since incorporation on July 3, 1979, the Calabasas Historical Society has been dedicated to promoting and preserving the historical interest of Calabasas and surroundings.

The grass roots volunteer organization has contributed to the Kathleen Beachy Memorial Library at Pierce College and the Ruth Loring Collection of Southern California History housed at the Calabasas Library.
