What's new on DVD

Film and television author Randy Williams reviews the latest movies, television shows, documentaries and music programs now available for purchase online and at retail stores.

The Jason Bourne Collection (Universal)- Smart, suspenseful, spectacular, this tremendous trilogy features Matt Damon as Jason Bourne, an elite government agent outwitting and outmaneuvering anyone preventing him from learning about the secrets of his mysterious past. "The Bourne Identity," "The Bourne Supremacy" and "The Bourne Ultimatum" are included. This slick package also features an oversize Bourne passport that includes a fourth disc of bonus material. Hours of extras include a look at the pyrotechnical sequences done without digital effects, how the exotic locations affected the filmmaking, Damon's fight training, a diagnosis of Bourne's amnesia by a renowned psychologist, a profile of author Robert Ludlum and the origins of the characters, as well as deleted scenes.

When Harry Met Sally

Collector's Edition (MGM)- This classic romantic comedy, directed by Rob Reiner and featuring Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan, stylishly and intelligently lays out the truths involving the issue of sex in the friendships between men and women. Feature-length audio commentary by Reiner, Crystal and writer Nora Ephron (who would also write and direct another romantic comedy starring Meg Ryan, the Oscar-nominated "Sleepless in Seattle") are provided. Additional bonus features include: "What Harry Meeting Sally Meant," "I Love New York," "Stories of Love," It All Started Like This," "When Rob Met Billy," "Creating Harry" and "So, Can Men and Women Really Be Friends?"

Shrek the Third (Dreamworks)- The popular ogre is back as the greatest fairy tale never told continues in Far Far Away Land. Shrek goes on another adventure with Donkey and Puss in Boots to find the rightful heir to the throne. A castleful of special features include: "Artie's Yearbook," "Shrek's Guide to Parenthood," "Tech of Shrek," "Merlin's Magic Crystal Ball" and more "Shrektivities" to make fans enjoy the merriment happily ever laughter.

Northern Exposure-The Complete Series (Universal)- Now for the first time this multiEmmy and Golden Globewinning series is completely exposed on DVD. All 110 episodes of the adventures of the quirky residents in the small Arctic town of Cicely, Alaska, featuring a recent medical school graduate from New York (Rob Morrow as Dr. Joel Fleischman) are warmly packaged and tucked inside a neat ultra-suede and lamb's wool pouch that is stenciled with the iconic moose and Northern Exposure logo. Each season has a set of special features, with extended footage from various episodes, outtakes from selected episodes, deleted scenes and "unexposed footage." The disc cases contain episode guides, running times and listings of special features.

MI-5 Vol. 5 (BBC Warner)- One of television history's best spy series continues into a fifth season. "Spooks" (as it is known in the UK) is riveting drama, smartly paralleling the nature of the espionage game with revolving agents presented in realistic speed and complexity. Cast and crew interviews are included.

Saturday Night Live-The Complete Second Season (Universal)- For more than three decades this iconic program has provided a platform for some of America's leading performers. This season introduced a new player, Bill Murray, and was the last season for Chevy Chase. Complete shows on eight discs include an eclectic parade of hosts and musical performers, including Steve Martin, Ralph Nader, Fran Tarkenton, The Kinks, Chuck Berry, George Harrison and Joe Cocker (featured with John Belushi). There is also a special show at the Mardi Gras in New Orleans.

America's Game-The Super Bowl Champions (Warner Bros.)- Produced by NFL Films, one of the premier documentarians, this 40-disc collector's set is by far the most comprehensive coverage of the winners of the world's single biggest sports event. Combining news clips, radio and TV highlights, revealing sideline audio, rare access inside team meetings and behindthescenes accounts from some of the game's greatest players, each Super Bowl winning team, from Vince Lombardi's Green Bay Packers to the Peyton Manningled Colts who won last year's title, are profiled. There are insider perspectives from more than 100 NFL stars and stirring narration provided by Alist actors, including Gene Hackman, Alec Baldwin and Bruce Willis. A collector's booklet with rare photographs is also part of this topnotch documentary series.

Treasury of 100 Storybook Classics (Scholastic)- A treasure trove of popular children's stories are faithfully adapted and brought to life in this comprehensive 16DVD collection. Tales involving typing cows, cycling monkeys, a snowy day and a happy lion are just a few selections from this presentation that has won more than 50 awards from parental and educational associations. The entertaining set is enhanced by celebrity narrators, including Forest Whitaker, Sarah Jessica Parker and James Earl Jones.

Ratatouille (Disney)- Paris, the City of Lights, is seen from a different perspective, namely through the dreams of a determined young rat looking to make his mark as a renowned French chef. Cooked up by the creators of "Cars" and "The Incredibles," "Ratatouille" is more Pixar magic, brilliant in color and detail. Bonus features include: deleted scenes, a pair of animated short films and a behindthescenes feature with both director Brad Bird and acclaimed chef Thomas Keller. Bon appetit.

Groundhog Day15th Anniversary (Sony)- Bill Murray is at his wry, wisecracking best in this imaginative romantic comedy. He stars as a television weatherman trapped in a personal time warp on the worst day of his life, stuck in a small Pennsylvania town covering the annual Groundhog Day festivities. Costarring Chris Elliott and Andi MacDowell, special features include: "The Weight of Time" documentary, "The Study of Groundhogs: A Real Life Look at Marmots," deleted scenes and an interview with director Harold Ramis.
