The environmental campaign was established last year by the Heal the Bay group to encourage businesses and individuals to do without single-use, plastic shopping bags for at least one day. Reusable bags will be distributed in front of Calabasas' Albertsons, Gelson's and Ralphs markets from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. This is Calabasas' first year participating. Agoura Hills also joined in and will distribute resuable bags in front of Ralphs at Kanan Road and Thousand Oaks Boulevard. According to Heal the Bay, more than six billion plastic bags are used in L.A. County each year, costing cities up to 17 cents per bag for disposal. Heal the Bay is a nonprofit environmental organization dedicated to making Southern California coastal waters and watersheds, including Santa Monica Bay, safe, healthy and clean.
