      The city of Calabasas is joining more than a dozen Los Angeles County cities in making Thurs., Dec. 18 "A Day Without a Bag." The environmental campaign was established last year by the Heal the Bay group to encourage businesses and individuals to do without single-use, plastic shopping bags for at least one day.

Family appeals for help following fire
      An Oak Park residence caught fire on the morning of Dec. 4, damaging the owner's house and belongings, as well as her philanthropic holiday plans. Brenda Hagen was at her home in the 400 block of Cresthill Drive when she smelled a strong burning odor at about 11:50 a.m.

Westlake graduate wins film award
      A 2008 Westlake High School graduate has won an award for her work behind the camera during a recent trip around the world. Sarah Miller, 18, created a film, "Namaste," which compares her life with those of her peers in Nepal, emphasizing the differences in their conceptions of necessity, wealth and happiness.

'Pearls' attend Charity League ball
      National Charity League Inc., San Fernando Valley Chapter recently held its 43rd annual Charity Ball, "Pearls of Beauty," at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel. Since 1966, the chapter traditionally honors its most recent graduates for their years of service to the chapter and to the community.

Entries sought for art, poetry contest
      The California Coastal Commission invites all students in kindergarten through grade 12 to enter the 2009 California Coastal Art and Poetry Contest. All entries must have a state coastal or marine theme. Winners will be selected in both art and poetry in each of four gradelevel categories: K3, 46, 7-9 and 10-12.

Big winner in Childhelp fundraiser
      CHRISTMAS CHEER— Westlake Village resident Linda Godling wins a fruit-embellished Christmas wreath during the silent auction at the 24th annual Festival of Trees 2008 luncheon at Sherwood Country Club in Thousand Oaks last weekend. The fundraiser supports Childhelp, which is dedicated to the prevention and treatment of child abuse.

      The Malibu Lagoon Museum, Adamson House, has openings for volunteer docents to provide tours of the home for the public. The house is in Malibu State Lagoon Park, west of the Malibu pier next to Surfrider Beach.

Photographer to auction his work in support of St. Jude hospital
      Local photographer Dr. Scott Blatt will hold a charity auction from 6 to 10 p.m. Sat., Dec. 13 at Sherwood Country Club, 320 W. Stafford Road, Thousand Oaks. Blatt will auction off 150 of his framed photographs from around the world. Proceeds will benefit St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
