Eagles dial long distance in season opener
      It seems the farther away the Oak Park High boys' basketball team gets from the basket, the more successful they become. The Eagles, fresh off a TriValley League championship campaign that saw the squad go 22-8 overall and 11-1 in league, began this season on the proper note by defeating Santa Paula at home, 68-58, Tuesday night.

V.C. Fusion seeks soccer standouts
      Ventura County Fusion's Premier Development League men's team is seeking soccer players from the Ventura County area who believe they are good enough to play professionally. Players are needed for Fusion's 2009 season roster and to play in winter exhibitions against visiting professional clubs.

Strikers secure first-place finish
      CVU IS NO.1— The Conejo Valley United Strikers girls' U-15 soccer team finished first in the Coast Soccer League Silver North Division. The Strikers had a 12-1-1 record in league play and outscored their opponents 30-7.

High school cross country campaign comes to a close
      All season long, the La Reina High cross country team waited for others to catch up. Last Saturday at Woodward Park in Fresno, La Reina capped off a stellar season by winning the CIF Division IV state championship. The state title was the first in program history.

Lions chase down semifinal berth
      STILL UNDEFEATED— Oaks Christian linebacker Tanner Maddux, left, brings down Pioneer Valley quarterback Nick Rucobo during last weekend's CIF-Southern Section Northwest Division quarterfinal game at OCHS. In their first true test of the season, the Lions prevailed 21-0 behind a defense that allowed just 72 yards of offense.

Football league braces for Super Saturday
      The Gold Coast Youth Football League will play its Super Bowl IV and Championship Division games Saturday at Royal High in Simi Valley. Throughout the day and night there will be raffles, 50/50 drawings, food and drinks, and the announcement of the league's scholastic achievement recipients.
