Calabasas teen plays 'Jeopardy!'
      A Calabasas High School senior is still on cloud nine after competing in last month's "Jeopardy! Teen Tournament," an edition of the popular television game show featuring bright teenage competitors. Ben Chuchla made it to the semifinals after beating out thousands of other teenagers to qualify for the annual show.

      The Society of Women Engineers recently announced Kate Van Dellen, a 2004 graduate of Agoura High School, is a recipient of this year's Collegiate Member Award for outstanding efforts and leadership as an undergraduate student.

Eagle Scout helps restore Malibu Creek State Park
      Brian Toone recently completed his Eagle Scout project of removing more than 500 feet of barbed wire fence from a remote area of Malibu Creek State Park accessible only by foot. This was part of an effort by park officials to restore the park to its natural state.

I'm a junky
There were times I ate candy that tasted just awful. But I couldn't spit it out.
      My wife left the house to meet an old friend for coffee, and my 5-year-old son was next door playing with the neighbor. It was the day after Halloween. I sat on the floor in my living room alone, staring at my boy's plastic pumpkin bucket of Halloween candy, debating whether or not to eat a piece.

Breakfast with Santa Saturday at Civic Center
      A "Breakfast with Santa and His Pals" for children will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Sat., Dec. 6 in the Founders Hall at the Calabasas Library, 200 Civic Center Way, Calabasas. A pancake breakfast, catered by Marmalade Cafe in Calabasas, will be available to children and their parents.

      Congregation Or Ami's Center for Jewish Parenting is currently offering a series of lectures that cover a wide range of parenting issues. Last month, Or Ami invited representatives from Beit T'shuvah and Malibu's Visions Treatment Facility to help parents understand some of the reasons why children turn to drugs and how the abuse can be prevented.

Rotary treats kids to shopping spree
      Santa came early this year for 25 children from the Conejo Valley when the Rotary Club of Westlake Village provided shopping buddies and $100 per child for disadvantaged boys and girls ages 6 to 17. Rotarians, their families, and friends met at 8 a.m. recently at J.C. Penney in The Oaks mall in Thousand Oaks and were paired with their buddy.

All about apples at the farm
      Fall brings a variety of apples and other fruits available now through December to the Ventura County Certified Farmers' Markets. Among the selections is a new crop of apples good for snacking or fall recipes. Nancy Rydell of Fair Hills Farms, who participates in the Ventura market, has a variety of gala, Fuji, pink lady and Granny Smith apples for consumers.

      The Calabasas Cheetahs Track and Field team will hold sign-ups for its upcoming season from 1 to 3 p.m. Sun., Dec. 14 in the parking lot at Calabasas High School, 22855 W. Mulholland Hwy., Calabasas. The Cheetahs are a youth team for participants ages 5 to 15. Children will receive instruction in track and field events and compete against other teams within the valley.
