Keep the peace regarding Prop. 8

This letter is written in response to a letter that appeared in the Nov. 13 edition of The Acorn regarding Prop. 8. The writer gushed about president-elect Barack Obama's message of tolerance and stated that supporting Prop. 8 is not what our newly elected leader had in mind when he asked all of us to be more accepting of one another.

The fact is that Barack Obama supports the traditional definition of marriage as the union between a single man and a single woman, as stated repeatedly throughout his campaign.

More importantly, the citizens of California have spoken on this issue by voting in support of Prop. 8 only to find themselves victims of namecalling and vicious attacks because of their personal beliefs.

What we have seen since the election are increasingly angry demonstrators causing traffic jams by uncontrolled marches, vandalizing property such as the Mormon Temple on Santa Monica Boulevard (hate crime), knocking a cross out of the hands of an elderly woman and stomping on it (hate crime), and generally showing a disregard for law-abiding citizens. So much for tolerance.

There are peaceful and legal ways for the opponents of Prop. 8 to pursue their goals. It's time for them to respect our legal system and the citizens of California. Barbara Nelson Oak Park
