It was Veterans Day and I drove through my neighborhood. There were only two American flags being flown on this special day. On Nov. 4 we voted. We have the freedom to vote because of our brave soldiers, and it's sad that only a week later we seem to have forgotten. More ... I am one of the "not very educated voters" who cast my ballot in the recent election for Michael McReynolds for one of the MAC seats. The reason? He was the only MAC candidate who took the time and effort to write a statement in the Voter Guide, and I appreciated that. More ... My fourth-grader at Red Oak Elementary will be in school a total of four full days in November. That's right. She has two days off for Veterans Day and the entire week of Thanksgiving off, not to mention six half-days for parent-teacher conferences, two half-days on Wednesdays for "banking time" and a half-day on Nov. 21 just for the heck of it. More ... Last Wednesday, the Agoura Hills City Council voted 4-to-1 in favor of a development agreement with the Heschel West Day School: In exchange for further concessions from the school, the city agreed not to block the development in court. More ... There were a couple of questions that seemed to be raised in a recent article that I would like to clarify related to the child nutrition program in the Oak Park schools. Two years ago, with the help of a committee comprising parents, educators and pediatricians, Oak Park developed a policy related to student wellness. More ... I'm responding to the Oak Park resident who wants a farmers' market. Come on, we don't need a farmers' market to buy organic fruits and veggies that will cure cancer, diabetes and other diseases. We have genetically modified engineered processed fruits and veggies at our big box strip malls. More ... As for Proposition 8, leave religion, politics, tolerance and emotions out of it. It's simple. Just look up the definition of "marriage" in any dictionary, and you will find that it clearly states that it is "the formal union of a man and a woman, typically recognized by law, by which they become husband and wife." That is marriage. More ... This letter is written in response to a letter that appeared in the Nov. 13 edition of The Acorn regarding Prop. 8. The writer gushed about president-elect Barack Obama's message of tolerance and stated that supporting Prop. 8 is not what our newly elected leader had in mind when he asked all of us to be more accepting of one another. More ... Our present "war of words" is an etymological conundrum on which the media loves to feed. It deals with the term "marriage." The fight is between a new secular definition of any type of union versus the traditional historical definition of marriage, which sanctifies the physical union of a man and a woman in order to procreate and provide for the future. More ... The "No on Prop. 8" crowd believes in one-way tolerance and in demonizing anyone who does not stand with them, denying my right to the democratic process and unabashedly trampling on the rights of individuals, businesses and churches. More ... There has recently been no shortage of argument concerning the outcome of the Proposition 8 vote. A recent letter to the editor of this paper commented that we should leave "religion" out of this matter. This view has become increasingly popular in many areas of society that deal with the subject of morality. More ... Regarding Proposition 8, Mr. Ziolkowski's letter in last week's Acorn said that it is "a constitutional amendment that actually denies, not awards, a section of our society basic rights." This mischaracterizes Prop. More ... Just as physical exercise is good for the body, First Amendment exercise is good for democracy. The Acorn Letters to the Editor section gives you an excellent opportunity to put your freedom of speech to work by voicing opinions, thoughts and concerns on any matter you wish. More ...
