Taking coots for granted
      Each time I am near a pond, lake or estuary, I look out across the waters and inevitably see an all gray or black bird with a white bill: the American coot ( Fulica americana ). The other day, watching these seemingly ever-present birds, I realized that I knew virtually nothing about them.

The wily fox
      Did you know? There are five species of fox found in North America: The red fox, swift fox, kit fox, island fox and gray fox. The female fox is called a vixen and the male a reynard. Young foxes are called kits, cubs and pups, and a group of foxes is called a skulk.
