Incumbents return to school board
      Voters chose to retain longtime Oak Park Unified School District Board Member Jan Iceland and recent appointee Barbara Laifman over two male challengers. Iceland, winning a fifth term, earned the highest count with 2,356 votes representing almost 34 percent.

Budget outlook changes for Las Virgenes
      The Las Virgenes Unified School District Board of Education approved its 45day budget revision under a cloud of economic uncertainty. "In 27 years working in school finance this is the first time we've ever had to do a 45-day revise (as early as) October," said Superintendent Donald Zimring.

Fundraiser is Nov. 13
      The Oak Park High School Parent-Faculty Club is hosting its fourth Ladies' Bunco Night at 7 p.m. Thurs., Nov. 13 in the school's pavilion. Prizes donated by local businesses will be awarded, and a variety of desserts will be served.

      Carlos Cruz, yard supervisor at Red Oak Elementary School in Oak Park, won gold and silver awards in his age group, 65 to 69, at the Western States Summer Police and Fire Olympic Games in Boise, Idaho last summer.

      Imagine a world without Internet, or high schools without computers. Although their parents lived in that time, today's high school students might find it hard to conceive of such a world. Today's schools rely on computers and the Internet, and without these tools some students would have trouble functioning.

School health clerk launches advisory group
      A parent advisory program started last year at Calabasas High School by health clerk Joey Levin is open to parents throughout the Las Virgenes Unified School Dis trict this year. The adults-only educational program, called RAP (Resolve and Problem Solve), was launched by Levin in 2007 to help parents "discuss real teen issues," Levin said.

Treats for UNICEF
      Round Meadow Elementary School in Hidden Hills joined in the 58th anniversary of Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF last week by distributing more than 500 trick or treat boxes to local children. The campaign encourages American children to make Halloween count by helping other children around the world.
