Cyclists should play by the same rules

Our area seems to be very popular with bicyclers. They seem to be everywhere, either alone or in groups, with their helmets and colorful tights. They seem so vulnerable, trying to stay within their narrow bicycle lanes with automobiles and trucks swiftly passing by.

Considerate drivers give them a wide berth for fear that a sneeze could send a bicycler into danger. However, some of their actions make me cringe, such as going through red lights, making U-turns across double yellow lines, riding in pedestrian crosswalks, and failure to stop when making right turns on red lights.

When I was a teenager I practically lived on my bike, but traffic was much lighter where I grew up. No one informed me at that time of any restrictions. All bicyclers should know that a bicycle has the same legal restrictions as any automobile.

Maybe our police should start ticketing errant bicyclers for their own safety. Martin J. Weisman Westlake Village
