'No on 8'

Against the backdrop of the worst economy in a century, this election season seems to have brought the bigots out of the woodwork. Although racism has been rampant against a presidential candidate who is half black, that is not what I am writing about.

I frame my comments by pointing out that the far right has consistently claimed the mantle of "strict constructionism" and argued that Roe V. Wade was wrongly decided on the grounds that the Constitution does not specifically contain "the right to an abortion" and thus "an activist court" wrongly extrapolated the fundamental "right to privacy" to extend to a woman's womb.

My strict constitutional friends, there is no question whatsoever that the Constitution very specifically grants full "equality" and "equal protection under the law" to every American man and woman and that includes my gay brothers and sisters. To exclude this group of American citizens alone from the institution of marriage can only be called the most hypocritically conspicuous form of "judicial activism."

I saw a sign that said "God did not create Adam and Steve" but it's obvious that he did and that these are not the words of an omnipotent God but rather an impotent man.

The Constitution guarantees you the right to practice your religion freely but it does not grant you the right to legislate it. The governing document of this nation is the Constitution, not the Bible. As a secure straight male in a monogamous 26year marriage, I am going to combat this unconstitutional tyranny by standing with my gay brothers and sisters and voting no on Prop 8. It's American.
