Myerson wins Golden Acorn for service

IRIS SMOOT Acorn Newspapers Longtime volunteer Barry Myerson received the 2008 Golden Acorn Award from the Community Foundation for Oak Park. Myerson was honored for his tireless efforts on behalf of Oak Park and the surrounding community.

"We are very proud to honor Barry Myerson with the highest award for volunteer service in Oak Park," said foundation president Eva Larson.

Myerson has served as chairperson of the Friends of Oak Park Schools for the past three years, raising funds to assist the Oak Park Unified School District in supplementing funding received from the state of California. Under Myerson's leadership the group has presented nearly $300,000 to the school district. He had spearheaded close cooperation between the various parentteacher organizations in Oak Park.

Myerson also served as a member of the board of directors of the Tiunfo YMCA from 2001 to 2003, helping plan and implement the Indian Guides and Trial Blazers Father/Child Program.

He currently serves as board member of the Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff's Booster Club which provides needed funds for various nonprofit organizations which are unavailable from the sheriff's department.

Myerson lso serves as a volunteer coach for Agoura Pony Baseball, teaching better baseball and life skills to young students of the game.

The Golden Acorn Award is presented by the Community Foundation for Oak Park to individuals who are dedicated to ongoing community service without seeking rewards.

Previous recipients include Pat Manning, Ron Stark, David Ross, Diane Starzak, Cindi Gortner, Harvey Kern and Jack Monico, deceased.
