School district okays design for high school performing arts centers

      A pair of performing arts education centers proposed for Agoura and Calabasas high schools have moved one step closer to construction. The Las Virgenes Unified School District on Sept. 23 approved John Sergio Fisher's architectural design plans for the two facilities.

Laifman comfortable with Oak Park schools

      Barbara Laifman has so enjoyed her nine months on the Oak Park Unified School District Board of Education that she has decided to run for a full, four-year term on the board in next month's election. Laifman was appointed to the school board last December to replace Jim Kalember, who resigned with one year left on his term.

Brownley honored by state school boards
      Completing her first twoyear session in the California State Assembly, Assemblymember Julia Brownley will be honored as the 2008 Outstanding Freshman of the Year by the California School Boards Association at the annual Education Conference in December.

Students inspired to keep P.E. alive
      Sumac Elementary School in Agoura Hills held a Rock 'N' Run Jog-athon rally Sept. 26. A short film, inspiring studentto " Ask Five to Keep P.E. Alive!was shown. Students are encouraged to ask at least five people to sponsor them to help fund Sumac's physical education program. Although California requires instructional P.E., it is not funded by the state.

      Workshops on how to obtain financial aid for college will be held at 10:30 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. Sat., Oct. 18 at the Newbury Park Library, 2331 Borchard Road; and Thurs., Oct. 23 at the Grant Brimhall/Thousand Oaks Library, 1401 E. Janss Road.

Public works scholarships available
      Scholarships are now available for college students who participated as interns or part-time employees at any public works agency or engineering consulting firm in Ventura County during any part of 2008. The deadline for the scholarship, administered by the Ventura County chapter of the American Public Works Association, is Oct. 31, 2008.
