Valley Girl Scouts receive Fernando Foundation honor Girl Scouts of the San Fernando Valley was awarded the 2008 Fernando Foundation Award on Sept. 13, one of 50 volunteerdriven valley organizations recognized by the foundation for overall excellence. The Fernando Award is the highest award for volunteerism in the valley and one of the top awards for civic accomplishment in the nation. Beginning Dec. 1, Girl Scouts of the San Fernando Valley will join five other local councils to form Girl Scouts of Greater Los Angeles. The new council will be among the largest in the U.S., with approximately 50,000 girls and 22,000 adult volunteers. Other 2008 Fernando Foundation honorees include the American Cancer Society, Boys & Girls Club, Encino-Tarzana Regional Medical Center, Goodwill, Habitat for Humanity, the Kiwanis Club, M.E.N.D., Operation Gratitude, Penny Lane Centers, Valley Cultural Center, YMCA, the Rotary Club, and the Valley Women's Center.
