Students deserve our support

Several members of our Oak Park community have written asking why the community of Oak Park should support a bond that will help the "out-of-district transfers." I believe these individuals are completely forgetting about our kids.

Regardless of the out of district transfers, don't our kids deserve a safe and well-kept place to learn? There is no doubt that our schools are in need of repairs. If you don't think so, call one of the principals and ask to take a tour with them. You'll be surprised.

Regardless of how the campuses got to this current state of disrepair, or folks trying to cloud the issue with "out-of-district" concerns, the work has to be done and sooner than later, or it will cost even more to correct as small leaks turn into big issues.

The only means the state of California provides for school districts to pay for the needed repairs and replacements is via a bond. OPUSD has placed a $29.5million bond initiative, Measure R, on the November ballot to address the work that's needed. Isn't it time our kids deserve our support? Peter Kristensen Oak Park
