      Three families from Viewpoint School in Westlake Village hosted a party to celebrate the Chinese Moon Festival and welcome Sara Qianrong Sun, an exchange student from China. Observed when the moon is closest to the earth, the Moon Festival is one of the most important holidays in the Chinese calendar.

Boy among top young U.S. chess players
      Dennis Neymit, 14, a ninthgrader at Agoura High School, has been playing competitive chess for the last three years. Despite playing relatively late, as many children he competes against have been playing since they were 5 and 6 years old, Dennis is in the top 100 youths in the country by chess rating for his age and is in the top 10 in California.

      American Girl Day will be held from noon to 4 p.m. Sat., Sept. 27 at The Lakes in Thousand Oaks. The family friendly event, co-hosted by Pardee Homes and American Girl, will feature the Kit's Home on Abbott Place playhouse, part of the Project Playhouse HomeAid fundraiser.

Free horse conformation clinic scheduled
      A free horse conformation clinic hosted by Thoroughbred Owners of California will be held at 10 a.m. Sat., Oct. 11 at Clockers' Corner, Santa Anita Racetrack, 285 W. Huntington Drive, Arcadia. Participants will meet leading California trainers and get an up-close look of race horses during a tour of the barn.

      ALWAYS PREPARED— Members of Agoura Hills Boy Scout Troop 127 soak up the sun at High Adventure Camp, Northern Tier in Minnesota in August. The boys traveled 88 miles by canoe on lakes along the border of Minnesota and Canada.

      The Fillmore & Western Railway Company has recently purchased the Red Barn fruit stand and garden center, a landmark along Highway 126 east of Santa Paula. The company is restoring and updating the building, along with a name change to Loose Caboose.

'Alice in Wonderland' coming to T.O.

      LITTLE REMBRANDTS— Children get help at a craft table at a Brandon's Buddies play date at Brandon's Village in Gates Canyon Park, Calabasas on Sat., Sept. 6. The onceamonth play date for children of all abilities was sponsored by Congregation Or Ami of Calabasas and included relay races, an obstacle course, a bean bag toss and a face painter.
