Students can brush up for tests

Students from any high school who need help with study and test-taking skills or with writing personal statements for college applications may attend one of two seminars on Sept. 28 at Oak Park High School.

The first, to be held from 9 to 11:30 a.m. in room G-9, is a study and test-taking workshop geared toward freshmen and sophomores. Susan Allen, a teacher at Oak View High School, will show participants how to study in order to earn high grades. The course includes a session from 11 to 11:30 a.m. for parents to learn how to help their children.

"This will help students identify what type of learners they are and help them better understand how they should study in order to perform better at school and on tests," said Barbara Vaswani, Oak Park Parent-Faculty Club vice president of programs.

The second course will be from 9 to 11 a.m. in the Pavilion and is directed toward juniors and seniors. Oak Park AP English teacher Kathy Schultheis has led the workshop for a number of years. Participants will come away from the class with ideas on what to write about as well as a rough draft of a college application essay.

"The two-hour seminar will help students organize their thoughts and help them write an effective personal statement essay, part of the college application process, so their essay will stand out to college application readers," Vaswani said

A donation of $20 per person for each seminar is requested to cover the materials and instructor's stipend.

Registration forms are available in the Oak Park High School front office or online at www.ophs.opusd.k12.ca.us/ Parent%20Groups/pfc.htm.
