Freeway access causing headaches Response to "Interchange could use better signage," Aug. 21. While the writer makes some good points in support of those who are unfamiliar with the area, he fails to recognize the fact that most of the people causing the dangerous problems he cites are residents of the area. The problems are caused by locals who are too impatient to wait in that single line starting at Hillrise to enter the southbound 101. Is it a pain, yes it is, but this is the situation we have to live with at this moment. Time and time again, you notice drivers driving in the left lane until they reach Old Canwood and then start holding up traffic while they attempt to get into the proper lane to enter the southbound 101. If they cannot make it into that lane by the time they pass the northbound 101 on ramp, they either floor their vehicle to get ahead of the car next to them or cross the yellow bike lane to force their way into the southbound 101 lane instead of turning left onto Roadside and going to the Chesebro 101 on ramp. Along with some of the suggestions of the writer, Caltrans should consider these suggestions: Changing the street striping for the southbound 101 lane to include a solid double yellow line making it illegal to cross the yellow lines in the last 70 to 100 feet before entering the southbound 101. Change the timing of the signals at Old Canwood in the morning to allow more vehicles to enter the southbound 101. Delay the signal change at New Canwood to allow the vehicles southbound to clear the intersection and not have the vehicles entering from New Canwood blocking that intersection waiting to enter the southbound lanes. As long as citizens continue to address the situation and present ideas that may work rather than just harping, the situation will ultimately get better. Arnold Prepsky Oak Park |
