Events planned for Audubon
      The Ventura County Audubon Society has announced events for September. •Dee Lyon will lead a group to the Santa Clara River Mouth Sat., Sept. 6 to look for ducks, sandpipers, herons, terns, plovers, phalaropes, turnstones, moorhens, pipits and ospreys. Attendees meet at 8 a.m.

Cantor and son perform together
      DYANMIC DUO— Cantor Doug Cotler and his son Kyle perform original music for 1,500 Jewish educators at the Conference on Alternatives in Jewish Education convention in Burlington, Vt. The Grammy Award-winning cantor of Congregation Or Ami in Calabasas produced the conference's closing event. It was the first time he and his son performed together on stage.

Red Cross director to speak
      Catholics@Work invites the public to a talk by Maria Sanchez, talk show radio host and director of Ventura County's Red Cross at 7 a.m. Thurs., Sept. 11 at Marie Callender's, 1295 S. Victoria Ave., Ventura. As host of "The Maria Sanchez Show," Sanchez shares her experience of living her faith in a public setting.

Calvary Community Church selects new senior pastor
      After a yearlong nationwide search, Calvary Community Church of Westlake Village has appointed Shawn R. Thornton as the new senior pastor. Originally from South Bend, Ind., Thornton has spent the last 10 years in Charleston, W.Va., serving as the senior pastor of Bible Center Church.

Ecumenical gathering scheduled
      Plans are underway for the annual General Assembly of the National Council of Churches USA and Church World Service in Denver from Nov. 11 to 13. The theme of the 2008 General Assembly is, "Jesus Said . . . Whoever is Not Against You is For You," from Luke 9:50.
