Calabasas Teen Court moves to new location

Calabasas Teen Court has moved to a new location at the Founder's Hall in the new Calabasas Library on Civic Center Way.

Every third Thursday of the month, teen offenders come to Calabasas to face a judge and a jury for their crime. The jury, however, is made up of their own peers—high school students making decisions about their sentencing.

"The jury members are actually the ones that go in for deliberations, and decide what sentencing would be," said Michelle Lee, a recreation specialist for the city.

"For example, they may have to write an essay on the dangers of alcohol. The teens decide what would be good, like if they got in trouble at the Commons, they may have to stay away from there."

Students in high school ages 13 to 18 may volunteer to be on the jury. The jury, along with a local volunteer judge or attorney who presides as judge, will hear cases of teen offenders, ages 13 to 17, who have committed a misdemeanor crime.

The court meets at 4:15 p.m.

The Calabasas Library is located at 200 Civic Center Way.

For more information, call Michelle Lee at (818) 880-6461.

Lee recommends calling before attending to ensure there are cases to be heard.
