Interchange could use better signage As an Oak Park resident I travel south on Kanan to reach the 101 interchange. I daily see drivers breaking the law at the interchange. In their panic to get into the lane they want they, of course, not only endanger themselves but others as well. I can't say it's completely their fault. Anyone who uses this interchange can attest that there are very few signs as you approach the freeway. The signs at the interchange are adequate but sadly lacking before it. As you drive south on Kanan from Thousand Oaks Boulevard there's one sign informing drivers which lane to be in for the upcoming freeway entrances. If you've never noticed it, which is quite likely, it's located on the right side just a few feet south of the Hillrise Drive light, but it's so small and inconspicuous that it's of no real help to anyone. Many months ago I went into the Agoura Hills City Hall and spoke with someone in the city engineering department about this. I was informed that the above mentioned sign meets all regulation requirements. I suggested that it may meet minimum requirements but it does nothing to aid drivers who are unfamiliar with the area or local drivers that might need a helpful reminder as they approach the interchange. I was assured that once everyone was more familiar with the interchange that the jockeying for position incidents would diminish. I suggested then and I suggest again that the large northbound 101 and southbound 101 signs be painted on the road in the appropriate lanes just south of Hillrise Drive. That way, drivers would be reminded and have enough time to safely get into their desired lane. This seems to me a simple and fairly inexpensive solution to this ongoing problem. A lane sign hanging from the Canwood Street light pole over the roadway wouldn't hurt either. The signs as you approach the interchange from Malibu are just as inadequate. No signs. I don't get it. What gives? Jeffrey Combs Oak Park |
