Animal shelter recognized

The Board of Directors of Las Virgenes Municipal Water District recognized the Los Angeles County Agoura Animal Shelter as its Outstanding Citizen of the Month at the board's Aug. 12 meeting.

Earlier this year the shelter completed renovations that were "long overdue," according to shelter manager Denise Rosen.

Renovations included artificial turf in the pet exercise yards. The durable artificial surface is designed to reduce maintenance and irrigation costs.

The runs are washed and sanitized daily to ensure healthy conditions for the animals. Additional shade cover has been installed to compensate for the heat retained by the turf. Dogs' paws stay cleaner and issues with allergies to grass are eliminated.

Using artificial turf as part of a landscape is one way to reduce outdoor water use. It has a permeable backing that allows liquids to drain through and looks more natural than indoor-outdoor carpeting artificial turfs from the past.

The honor for the Agoura Animal Shelter is given in conjunction with LVMWD marking "50 Years of Service" to the region.

Each month through June 2009, the board will recognize citizens for their efforts in conservation, education, watershed stewardship, or contributions to the history or heritage in the growth of the water district.
