'American Idol's' Bo Bice brings rockin' style to The Canyon
ROCK THE HOUSE—Former "American Idol" runner-up Bo Bice performs at The Canyon club in Agoura Hills. The hot local group, JetStream, opened. "American Idol" alumnus Bo Bice rocked The Canyon club in Agoura Hills July 25 with songs from his second album, "See The Light."
Bice, who continues to opt for the Jesus in the '70s look with a beard and long flowing locks, demonstrated the same clear vocals and pedaltothemetal style that made him a sensation on television's popular talent show. Bice came in second behind Carrie Underwood in the 2005 Idol competition.
Bice said his "See the Light" album, released in 2007, is "genuinely Bo." The Southernstyle rock 'n' roll sound and lyrics were a departure from his first post-Idol album, "The Real Thing," which gave fans a taste of his range.
At The Canyon, Bice showed proof of his wide versatility. In, "Take the Country Outta Me," he played guitar and harmonica and sang the lyrics that recalled his Idol experience:
Now my face might seem familiar
You see me smiling on T.V.
They might take me out to L.A. But they'll never take sweet Dixieland from me
Bice effected an Elvis lip curl during the song, which reinforced his genuine Southern charm and his appeal to the ladies.
Bo Bice fans both young and old came to the show.
Crystalinda White, 6, came to the concert from San Diego with her mother, Cat. Dressed in sparkly "American Idol" clothing—logo and all—she carried a toy microphone as a prop.
"He sings, like, this cool song," Crystalinda said. She reminisced about the time she saw him perform in Maryland. "He gave me a pick to play guitar," she said.
Crystalinda's pal, Lashyrah Obannonle, 7, was moved by the groove during the more than one-hour show and bopped to the beat of each passing tune.
Middle-aged women made up the majority of the audience, but men were spotted, too, tagging along with girlfriends and wives.
Dianna Wesolowski of Santa Clarita said she met Bice at "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno."
"It was the Southern rock and the hair," Wesolowski said of her admiration for the singer. Her friend, Judy McClenahan, said she rooted for Bice to win the "American Idol" title.
Bice punctuated his performance with a pair of encores, including Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Sweet Home Alabama," a tribute to his home state.
