Local school officials lobby the governor

      Las Virgenes Unified School District officials and parents heading the grassroots organization, C.O.R.E. (Californians Organized to Rescue Education), met with Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger to explain how their budget needs differ from other school districts in the state, and to seek financial relief.

Honor roll
      •A total of 139 students completed their master's or doctoral degrees at California in May at Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks. The school offers six graduate programs within the College of Arts and Sciences, School of Business and School of Education.

Westlake High freshman wins Disney-Jump writing contest

      Despite writing her entry last minute, a local student was one of two winners in a major writing contest put on by Disney. Zoe Lemieux, who will be a freshman at Westlake High School in the fall, won the ninth annual Disney-Jump at the Sun Academic Scholarship contest for grades five through eight.
