Likes smaller bond measure

The Oak Park School District is to be commended for listening to the focus group, and scaling down its latest bond request (Measure R).

As the state is threatening to reduce educational expenses- no cost of living adjustment is a reduction in financial support- local districts will have to be responsible for more of their expenses.

As a teacher who has seen the effects of leaky roofs in a classroom (one of my colleagues had a personal library of over 500 books destroyed in last January's rain), this bond request is not extraneous.

What are our students to think when they see peeling paint, leaking pipes, and frayed carpet?

They will see a society that ignores its school facilities as one that does not care about education, or the future.

This bond is a sound investment in the future of our schools. I urge a "yes" vote. Ed Kaz Oak Park
