Calabasas street repairs begin

      The annual Calabasas street overlay program has begun on various streets throughout the city. The resurfacing will take place from now until August. Streets will be paved one travel lane at a time and traffic control will be provided.

Man completes fire academy
      Erik Acevedo completed the training academy for the Los Angeles City Fire Department. He is currently stationed in the MidWilshire area. Acevedo is a graduate of Agoura High School. He earned a degree in exercise biology and communications from UC Davis, where he was a member of the university's student firefighter program for three years.

RV owners need permit under new law

      The Calabasas City Council has changed its RV parking ordinance- again. The new ordinance requires RV owners to obtain a permit if they wish to park their oversized vehicles on public streets for up to 72 hours. The ordinance passed 32, with Councilmembers Barry Groveman and James Bozajian voting against it.

      Oak Park is preparing for the third annual National Night Out Against Crime on Sat., Aug. 2. Several neighborhoods will host representatives from local departments and boards including sheriff's, fire, recreation and parks departments as well as supervisors and school board members.

Tennis player serves up donated gear
      GAME, SET, MATCH- Shelby Sinoway of Calabasas donates used tennis racquets to the National Junior Tennis League. Shelby, a 15-year-old Chaminade High School student and an avid tennis player, collected 75 racquets for use by NJTL players.       Jeret Doiron remembers well the day he met MacKenzie Maier, a 4yearold girl suffering from cancer. Doiron, a former Lost Hills sheriff's deputy, had a tradition of passing out stuffed Santa Claus dolls to kids he encountered while patrolling on Christmas Eve.

Donations fill Manna shelves as food, cash keep rolling in

      When the call went out that Manna, the local food bank, was low on food and filled with hungry clients, many people responded with cash and food. Bags, baskets and buckets of fresh fruit and garden vegetables began to arrive immediately, executive director John Gorham said.

Quartet brings home blue ribbons
      Spirit, an a cappella women's quartet, recently won first-place blue ribbons in the Sweet Adelines Region 11 quartet competition in Bakersfield. This qualifies the group to compete internationally in Honolulu in November.
