USA Water Polo teams set to announce final rosters With less than two months until the start of the 2008 Olympic Games, USA Water Polo will announce the final rosters for the men's and women's Olympic teams on Mon., June 30, at 10 a.m. at the Los Angeles Athletic Club. Women's team head coach Guy Baker and men's team head coach Terry Schroeder will be on hand to announce their teams and introduce the 13 athletes chosen for each squad. Currently, the USA Women are ranked first in the world after winning the 2007 FINA World Championship in Melbourne, Australia, while the men are ninth. Both teams qualified for the 2008 Olympic via gold medals at the 2007 Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Guy Baker leads the No. 1ranked women's team into the Olympic Games aiming for a gold medal that has eluded the squad in their last two ventures. Having secured a silver (2000) and bronze (2004), the team will look to build off its 2007 World Championship when they arrive in Beijing. Anchored by team captain and two-time Olympian Brenda Villa, the squad is poised to make another run this August. Schroeder, who was a threetime captain of the men's team and two-time silver medalist during the 1980s, has reinstalled a common theme of teamwork among the '08 squad. Team captain Tony Azevedo returns for his third Olympics, backed by a team likely to blend old and new to help complete a mission designed on returning to the podium. |
