Chaparral teacher wins award for iMovie

      The marriage of technology and imagination in Nanci Powers' kindergarten class at Chaparral Elementary School in Calabasas helped youngsters become "letter experts." Powers and her class produced an iMovie called "Alphabet Zoop" using new equipment provided through a $128-million school bond measure passed in 2006.

Contractors award scholarships
      The Ventura County Contractor's Association recently awarded $12,000 in scholarships to students pursuing education for a career in the construction industry. Additionally, six students received $5,000 in scholarship awards from the local chapter of the National Association of Women in Construction.

13-year-old is college-bound
     HONOR STUDENT- Michelle Vaisman of Agoura Hills accepts an award from the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth. Michelle, a 13-year-old who attends HarvardWestlake Middle School, will skip high school and attend Mary Baldwin College of Virginia this fall. Leadership academy signing up for fall
Program open to Ventura County residents
      The Ventura County Leadership Academy is accepting applications for participation in Class XIV for the 200809 program year. Participation is open to anyone living or working in Ventura County. The academy was founded in 1994 with the mission of developing a diverse group of leaders whose actions enhance the quality of live throughout Ventura County.

      The bonds of friendship and the importance of dreams were a prominent theme at the June 19 graduation ceremony at Agoura High School. Senior Maarvi Khawaja spoke to the class of 2008 on the topic of shared experiences at the school and the dreams that will lead each student to their destiny.

      Stephanie Gaines had many memorable moments during her Calabasas High School graduation ceremony last week, but the most special, she said, was receiving her diploma from her mother. Stephanie's mother is Jill Gaines, a member of the Las Virgenes Unified School District Board of Education.

      Young Eric Lamm is living his dream. Lamm, an Agoura High School graduate and an accomplished musician, has been accepted to The Juilliard School, a competitive performing arts conservatory in the heart of New York City. Lamm received a scholarship that will cover his tuition at the private school for four years.

Student travels long road for diploma

      To ensure he would graduate from high school Edgar Ribachauskas, 18, left his Las Vegas home to attend Indian Hills High School in Calabasas. Short 100 units when he arrived at Indian Hills in September 2007, Ribachauskas had to work day and night to meet the graduation requirements.

Indian Hills students say goodbye to Calabasas campus

      The 35 seniors who graduated this year from Indian Hills High School will be the last group of students to celebrate their commencement at the Calabasas campus- for a while at least. The Las Virgenes Unified School District, in a move to offset state budget cuts, has leased the Calabasas campus to a private school for the next three years.
