Community mourns loss of firefighter Kevin Pryor
      Fire bells rang for the last time on Tues., June 24 for Oak Park son Kevin Pryor. A funeral service for the 31-year-old firefighter was held at St. Maximilian Kolbe Catholic Church in the community where he grew up.

Manna's cupboards are bare again
Food collection a year-round necessity
      Santa Claus came early to the Manna Food Bank in Thousand Oaks this year. He didn't fly on a sled from the North Pole, but came from Agoura Hills and delivered $600 in goods from Costco to keep food on the shelves for a weekend earlier this month.

Soteras named to regional water board
      Alex Soteras of Calabasas has been appointed by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger to serve on the ninemember Los Angeles Regional Water Quality Control Board. Soteras has owned Soteras Mortgage since 1984 and is director of the United Chambers of Commerce of the San Fernando Valley.

      Zachary Gordon had a good excuse for missing 72 days of school this year at Oak Hills Elementary in Oak Park. The 10-year-old is an award-winning actor who spent the time making films, television shows and commercials.

      Emergency services exercise set for June 28 The Conejo Valley Amateur Radio Club will host the annual 24hour emergency field operations exercise starting 11 a.m. Sat., June 28 at the National Park Service Headquarters, 401 W. Hillcrest Drive, Thousand Oaks.

Japanese Americans' military service honored
     COUNTRYMEN- Pat Noriyuki Morita, right, appears in "Only the Brave," a feature-length movie about Japanese Americans who served in the United States military in World War II. The Ventura County Japanese American Citizens League will host a screening of the film at 2 p.m Sun., July 13 at the Teledyne Auditorium, 1049 Camino Dos Rios in Thousand Oaks. The cost is $7 for VCJACL members, $10 for others and $5 for students with identification. A question and answer period will follow the film.

Youth Volleyball League registration opens
      The United State Youth Volleyball League is registering for the fall 2008 season. The Calabasas league will meet 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesdays and 10 to 11 a.m. Saturdays at Chaparral Elementary School, 22601 Liberty Bell Road. The season begins Sept. 9 and ends Nov. 1.

There's a new deputy in town
      The Calabasas City Council is adding a new deputy to work primarily with teenagers in the city. The new deputy will focus on Calabasas High School and the middle schools, as well as The Commons and the new Calabasas Civic Center on weekends.

Agoura Hills Boy Scout earns Eagle Scout rank
Active in hiking and camping
      Cameron Kinney from Agoura High School was awarded the rank of Eagle Scout at a May 13 recognition dinner at the Ronald Reagan Library. Only 2 percent of the boys who enter Scouts are able to achieve the high ranking.

Brookside studies the sea
      ON THE BEACH- Brookside Elementary School students in Paula Stromquist's fourth-grade class learn about local wildlife and wetlands at Malibu Lagoon recently. The Oak Park students helped to test the salinity and quality of the marsh water. Malibu Lagoon is undergoing a major restoration project to improve the polluted wetland ecosystem.

     HOME RUN- Westlake Baseball Association commissioner John Burtzloff, right, presents a check for $3,600 to Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation board member Todd Zeile, a former Major League Baseball player. The association raised the money at a recent gala at The Canyon club featuring dinner, live and silent auctions and a performance by JetStream, a local teenage band.

Library, City Hall prep for move
      The Calabasas Library Park Sorrento location will close at 9 p.m. today, Thurs., June 26 in order to move into the new 25,000square-foot facility at 200 Civic Center Way, formerly Park Centre. The library will re-open for regular business hours at the new location at 10 a.m. Tues., July 15.

      The Ventura County Fire Department reminds residents that the safe and legal way to enjoy fireworks on Fourth of July is at a professional public display. Fireworks of all kinds are illegal in the cities of Camarillo, Moorpark, Ojai, Port Hueneme, Simi Valley, Thousand Oaks and the unincorporated areas of Ventura County such as Oak Park.
