Student able to find the correct path Erin Viselman wasn't always valedictorian material. The Oak Park teen displayed behavioral problems, missed several days of school each week, and failed to do her homework. But last week Viselman graduated with honors from Oak View High continuation school in Oak Park, earning several scholarships and the title of valedictorian for her 3.7plus grade point average. "I'm most proud that she's turned her life around from not wanting to attend school and running away from things in life," said Ed Viselman, the girl's father. Erin Viselman credited Oak View with helping her to "get back on track." "It's a good environment. They support a clean and sober lifestyle. The teachers are really caring, very personal, and help you individualize," said Viselman, who earned two scholarships, one from the local Rotary Club for an essay she wrote and another from the Oak Park Teachers' Association. When she first arrived at Oak View in the middle of 10th grade- after struggling through a year-and-a-half at Oak Park High School- Viselman said her interest in class continued to wane. She said Oak View teacher Susan Allen spoke with her and helped her get more involved in school. "I never thought school was interesting before," said the 18year-old Viselman. Later, she said, "I decided I wanted to utilize my time in school to do something good and go to college." Viselman is looking for a summer job and plans to attend Santa Monica City College. She's not sure what her major will be but knows it will involve counseling. "I want to talk to people about the problems they have and help them out," she said. |
