Malibu Pier to reopen following renovation

Historic Malibu Pier at Surfrider Beach will officially reopen on Sun., June 29 following its long-awaited restoration.

A community celebration at the pier from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m will raise funds for the nonprofit Malibu Legacy park development project.

In addition to the Beachcomber restaurant, other highlights of the newly refurbished 100-year-old pier will include the Malibu Pier Club Bar and the soon-to-open Ruby's Shake Shack. Also slated are a gift shop, a bait and tackle shop, a surf museum and a boat and deep sea fishing tour business.

Guests strolling on the pier during the grand opening will sample from hors d'oevures that reflect the dishes of the Beachcomber menu. A Ketel One ice bar will be open and several top Malibu wineries- Cielo Estate, Malibu Vineyards, Rosenthal, Semler and Saddlerock Estates- will be giving samples.

Entertainment will be provided by "Stompy Jones," a San Francisco based six-person swing band with two pianists.

There will also be a silent auction.

Tickets for the event are $75 for adults and $45 for children.

A portion of the ticket price and all of the proceeds from the silent auction will benefit Malibu Legacy Park, which will be constructed in the Malibu Civic Center and adjacent to the environmentally sensitive Malibu Lagoon.

"The pairing of the grand reopening of a treasured Malibu icon with a project designed to leave a clean water legacy along our coastline is perfect synergy," said Susan Shaw Noble, capital campaign coordinator for the city of Malibu.

The pier was built in 1905 to support the operations of Frederick Hastings Rindge's Malibu Rancho. In 1934 it was opened to the public for pier and charter fishing. The pier was heavily damaged in the El Nino storms in 1993 and damaged again in 1995. It was declared unsafe and was closed by the state.
