     LAURA STARKS/Special to The Acorn TOP AWARD- The Los Angeles Sheriff's Department's Success Through Awareness & Resistance program recognizes Sumac Elementary School fifthgrade student Everett Fitzpatrick, pictured with his teacher, Tracie Madden, as as the STAR "Student of the Year." Everett's essay regarding living a drug- and gang-free lifestyle earned him a letter from Sheriff Leroy Baca, among other things.

Calabasas student recognized for giftedness
      Andrew Gu, an 11yearold student from Calabasas, was recently honored at a statewide awards ceremony for gifted children held by The Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth (CTY). Andrew Gu was invited to the awards ceremony based on his exceptional performance on a rigorous, above-grade-level test given to second through eighth grade candidates.

Round Meadow proves to be 'water wise'
     JANN HENDRY/Acorn Newspapers GARDEN PARTY- Round Meadow Elementary School receives a $3,020 check from the Las Virgenes Water District for a waterefficient garden that was installed in front of the school. On hand for the garden dedication are, from left: parent faculty members Kimberly Steinbach, Cheri Lemons, Mathy Wasserman and Heather Rasnick; Las Virgenes School Board members Cindy Iser and Don Zimring; and Las Virgenes Municipal Water District representatives Joe Bowman and John Mundy.

High school juniors urged to apply to Anti-Defamation League mission
      High school students who will be starting their junior year this fall are invited to apply to participate in the Anti-Defamation League's Grosfeld Family National Youth Leadership Mission to the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C., from Nov. 16 through 19.

      California State University Channel Islands held its graduation May 17 in the South Quad of the University's campus. Local graduates include Matthew Kohler, Nima Rad and Valerie Zirpoli of Calabasas; and Whitney Blundell, Brendon Cussio, Kelsey Davis, David Fancher, Lacey Jacobi, Vanessa Koeritz, Kevin Majidian, Erik Oelsen, and Todd Vocke of Oak Park.

Students raise money to provide safe drinking water world-wide
      Brookside third-grade teacher Linda Glander, a member of the Oak Park District Wellness Committee and advisor to the Brookside Wellness Council, has launched a school service project to benefit CHARITY:WATER, an organization dedicated to providing safe, clean drinking water to people all over the world.

summer music camp
      Students entering grades one through eight are eligible to apply for the 16th annual Pizazz summer musical arts camp from Aug. 11 through 15 at the United Methodist Church of Westlake Village, 1049 S. Westlake Blvd. The camp is sponsored by the church's music ministry but uses a nonreligious arts curriculum.
