Agoura Hills sees revenue in city parks
      In anticipation of ball games and birthday parties competing for space at local parks with carnivals, corporate picnics and weddings, the Agoura Hills City Council examined its parks reservation policies at last month's meeting.

Westlake plans expanded hazardous waste program
      The city of Westlake Village will discontinue its motor oil collection program at Berneice Bennett Park on the fourth Saturday of each month. Sat., June 28 will be the last collection event. In its place, an expanded doortodoor household hazardous waste collection service will be offered to city residents.

Pollution mandates, fewer state funds make for tight Agoura Hills budget
      Agoura Hills city officials made several important belttightening moves at their May 28 budget workshop. Although reserves have fallen, the city nevertheless presented a balanced, $11.8-million budget with little reduction in community services.

Despite recession, city remains in giving mood
      Several local nonprofit agencies, school clubs and other groups received more than $26,000 in grants from the city of Agoura Hills during last week's budget workshop. The Agoura High School Music Boosters will receive $2,000, although the group requested a funding hike to $4,000. The school's senior class booster club received $1,000.

Taxpayer input is requested
      The Los Angeles Department of Public Works is asking for the public's opinion on projects designed to restore native habitats and improve beach and creek water quality. The workshop is June 10th from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Las Virgenes Municipal Water District Headquarters.

Calabasas introduces new 'green' city initiatives
      The Calabasas City Council launched the first phase of a new environmental initiative program with the debut of a website and a "Green Hour" program on the city's CTV television channel. A task force was established in November 2007 to develop environmental initiatives.

Acorn Bits
      Several recycling round ups are planned for next week in Calabasas. The city is holding a free electronic waste collection on June 7 at Calabasas City Hall from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Acceptable items include laptops and personal computers, microwave ovens, printers, radios, stereos and telephones.

      It will be a homecoming of sorts when Andrea Mallen takes over as principal of Oak Park High School on July 1. When Mallen replaces Lynn McCormack, who is retiring, she will return to the Conejo Valley where she lived and worked for more than 25 years.

Popular Agoura senior dies at 90
      Agoura Hills' beloved senior advisor and volunteer Eva Schindler died on May 21 at age 90. Schindler was an active member of the Agoura Hills Senior recreation program for over 20 years and served three terms on the city's senior advisory committee.

Young ambassadors promote understanding in Israel
      "I have proof that a great friendship between Arabs and Jews is possible," said Amri Shaffer, a Jewish teen who recently spent two weeks at the American Jewish University Brandeis-Bardin Campus in Simi Valley as a participant in Project TRIUMPH. He lived with 19 other teenagers- some Arab, others Jews- from Haifa, Israel.

Foundation raises $85,000 for children with heart disease
      The Music for Heart Foundation gala on May 4 at The Canyon in Agoura Hills exceeded the expectations of organizers. The themed dinner, dance and auction raised more than $85,000 to help save the lives of children who suffer from congenital heart disease.

      The Ventura County Library has a new web-based resource to help make it easier for patrons to maintain, repair and follow service bulletins and recalls for cars, trucks, vans and SUVs. The ChiltonLibrary database offers complete and detailed repair information on thousands of make and model combinations.

Cirque du Monarchs
     LEG STRETCHES- Boys from Monarchs Gymnastics in Newbury Park perform their skills at the May 31 "Cirque du Monarchs" show in Newbury Park. More than 300 young Monarchs gymnasts showcased their tumbling, vault, bars, beam and floor skills as the gym celebrated its 30th year in the community. Monarchs also has a studio in Agoura Hills.

Girl Scouts pitch in
     EQUESTRIAN HELPERS- Girl Scout Troop 460 shows off a check for more than $1,000 to donate to the Cal Coastal Horse Rescue in Ojai. The girls volunteered at the shelter cleaning stables, exercising, grooming and feeding the horses for three months.      TOGETHER FOR A CAUSE- The Stevens family of Thousand Oaks and the Black family of Oak Park park, members of Temple Adat Elohim in Thousand Oaks, participate in the Walk for Darfur on Sun., June 1 in West Hills. More than 100 congregants from local temples participated in the event. Rabbi Rebecca Dubowe was a guest speaker and congregants raised thousands of dollars for Jewish World Walk, the event's sponsor.

      My wife and 4-year-old son think I'm crazy. Friday the 13th is approaching, a day that rains bad luck on some people, and I don't want to discover that the air conditioner in my house is broken. I don't want to "accidentally" turn up dead.
