Rotarians donate to local charities Monies raised from the Westlake 5K/10K race and 14th annual street festival in April are being donated to 16 local charities and organizations, the Westlake Rotary Club announced during a recent luncheon at the North Ranch Country Club. The Rotary Club's "Day of Giving" applauded the volunteers who worked on the race and festival committee. Plaques and certificates of appreciation were given to 22 sponsors whose logos were displayed on a large banner at the front of the luncheon hall. Suzie Bornhauser, executive director of Lutheran Social Services, said the money given to her organization will be used to help the homeless in the Conejo Valley. Funds also were donated to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Disaster Communications Team, which was represented by Reserve Capt. Tom Fakehany. The team will use the money to replace equipment damaged in last year's fires, Fakehany said. "Rotary has supported us for years, enabling us to protect the health of many in the community in need of medical, pediatric, nutritional and educational care," said Sharon Baird of the Conejo Free Clinic. Scoutmaster Gary King from Troop 718 said he will use the Rotary donations to replace Scout camping equipment and purchase fundraising supplies. A round of applause also was given to Volunteer of the Year Mel Wilson, who has given 58 years of his life to the Boy Scouts of America. |
