No parcel tax means schools will suffer Oak Park residents did a wonderful thing back in 2004. The voters passed a school funding measure that allows the school district to go a step beyond the state's funding. This measure passed by an overwhelming 81 percent. This funding, that pays teacher salaries and allows the district to go beyond the basics, contributes to Oak Park having award-winning schools, turning out students who go on to college, and making our property values strong. Also, it doesn't burden senior citizens in our community because they will be exempt from paying it. Next year this funding will end, so it is up for renewal on the June 3 ballot. It is the same measure as before; the same amount of parcel tax. We've all heard the news that schools are on notice to expect drastic cuts in state funding. If Measure C on the ballot doesn't pass it will mean painful cuts directly affecting the quality of learning for our children. Keeping our schools strong is good for everybody in Oak Park and I plan to vote yes on Measure C. Keyla Treitman Oak Park |
