Can't find fault with Measure C So what's all this buzz about Measure C? Another tax to make up the state's shortfall? A way for the district to pay for administrative costs? If I don't have kids in the system, I shouldn't have to pay it- right? Basically, what's in it for me? If you're already an Oak Park property owner, you're already paying it. Measure C is simply an extension of a parcel tax approved four years ago by 81 percent of the voters for $197/year. And the money goes directly to the classrooms. None of the money goes to the state. It does not affect state contributions, nor can it be used for administrative salaries. It does not go toward buildings or technology as the previous proposals were intended. This is ensured by an independent oversight committee that audits the spending. There's a benefit even for residents without children attending Oak Park Unified Schools; a successful school district has a positive effect on all property values. There are many studies that demonstrate a strong correlation between community support of local schools and crime statistics and a positive standard of living. In recognition that seniors (65 and over) living on a fixed income may incur a hardship, they can be eligible for an exemption by contacting the school district office. Debbie McPherson Oak Park |
