Popular folk festival returns to Agoura
      The triple-digit temperatures didn't deter traditional music aficionados as they gathered at Paramount Ranch south of Agoura Hills to socialize and enjoy acoustic melodies last Sunday. The daylong Topanga BanjoFiddle Contest and Folk Festival, founded in 1961, attracts hundreds of musicians each year.

      Los Angeles County RegistrarRecorder/County Clerk's office says an additional 11,300 poll workers are needed to staff polling places for the June 3 primary election. Recruitment has been especially difficult in communities including Agoura Hills, Woodland Hills and Malibu, election officials say.

Amended state budget still poses problems for schools
Las Virgenes loss estimates are lowered
      Gov. Schwarzenegger's revised state budget, submitted to the Legislature on May 14, will restore billions of dollars to education, but Las Virgenes Unified School District must still contend with a loss of more than $2 million in the coming year, said Karen Kimmel, the district's chief business official.

Educators stage protest
      Hundreds of protestors rallied at the governor's office in Los Angeles May 16 and brought with them more than 7,500 letters demanding adequate funding for California public schools and healthcare. Seven hundred of the letters were tacked to a poster board that stretched a full city block.

Agoura and Calabasas left out
      Three local schools made Newsweek magazine's list of the top 1,300 public high schools in America. Westlake High School is 201, Oak Park High School is 435 and Newbury Park High School is 460, according to the magazine's method of calculation.

Calabasas picks members for Historic Preservation Commission
      Calabasas City Council members have appointed their nominees for the city's newly created Historic Preservation Commission. Judy Jordan, Kim Lamorie, Victor Pesiri, Taryn Wayne and Debra Bruschaber make up the commission, although there is still one vacancy.

Sherman announces funding for programs in the Santa Monica Mountains
Rim of the Valley Corridor Study also approved
      U.S. Rep. Brad Sherman (DSherman Oaks) has announced a Department of Interior award of $356,000 in federal funds to the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area. Sherman had sought funding from the department for environmental education and stewardship programs.

Redwood brings in books
Effort helps Rotary Club drive
      More than 8,000 books have been collected as part of a major book drive, and kids from Redwood Middle School played a big part in reaching that number. The local collection, organized by the Westlake Village/Sunrise Rotary Club, is part of an international book drive that will culminate at the Rotary International Convention next month in Los Angeles.

Calabasas publishes free summer transportation schedule online
      The city of Calabasas has released route schedules for free summer public transportation. Line 1 continues unchanged for the summer, and lines 2 through 7 will begin summer service on either Tues., June 24 or Mon., June 30, depending on the individual line and summer schools served.
